আসছে ১৭- জুলাই বি-স্ক্যানের দ্বিতীয় জন্মবার্ষিকীতে আমরা ছোটখাটো একটি আয়োজন করতে যাচ্ছি। যা ১৫ই জুলাই (বন্ধের দিন হিসেবে) জাতীয় জাদুঘরের সুফিয়া কামাল মিলনায়তনে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে। এ উপলক্ষ্যে সাংস্কৃতিক আয়োজনের পাশাপাশি মাধ্যমিক স্কুলগুলোতে (বাংলা মিডিয়াম) রচনা প্রতিযোগীতার আয়োজন করতে যাচ্ছি আমরা। লক্ষ্য একটাই - আগামী প্রজন্মের শিশুদের মাঝে সচেতনতা তৈরি করা। কারণ তারাই আমাদের ভবিষ্যৎ, তাদের মধ্যে থেকেই বেড়িয়ে আসবে আগামীদিনের রাজনীতিবিদ, শিক্ষক, স্থপতি, অর্থনীতিবিদ। ছোটবেলা থেকেই যদি তারা প্রতিবন্ধী মানুষের প্রাপ্য অধিকারের বিষয়ে সচেতন হয় তাহলে অদূর ভবিষ্যতে বাংলাদেশের মানুষেরা পাবে একটি সুস্থ্য, সুন্দর স্বাভাবিক জীবন।

দুটি বিভাগে এই প্রতিযোগিতাটি অনুষ্ঠিত হবে। ক বিভাগ - ৬ষ্ঠ থেকে ৮ম শ্রেণী। খ বিভাগ - ৯ম থেকে ১০ম শ্রেনী। প্রতিটি বিভাগকে দু'টি করে বিষয় দেওয়া হবে। পছন্দ অনুযায়ী রচনা লিখার সুযোগ পাবে ছাত্র-ছাত্রীরা। বি-স্ক্যান আয়োজিত জাতীয় জাদুঘরের সুফিয়া কামাল মিলনায়তনে প্রথম, দ্বিতীয় ও তৃতীয় স্থান অর্জনকারীদের হাতে পুরুস্কার তুলে দেওয়া হবে আগামী ১৫ই জুলাই'১১।

দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণঃ ফাল্গুনীকে নিয়ে সংবাদপত্রে বিভ্রান্তিকর তথ্য

সম্প্রতি এসএসসি তে ফাল্গু্নী সাহার অভাবনীয় সাফল্য আমাদের মাঝে অন্য রকম এক ভালো লাগা আশা ও সামনের দিকে চলার অভ্যুদয় এনে দিয়েছে। অসম্ভব মনের জোরের অধিকারী এই মেয়েটি দু'হাতের কবজি দিয়ে লিখে জিপিএ ৫ পেয়েছে এবার (পটুয়াখালী শহরের গলাচিপা মাধ্যমিক উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের মেধাবী ছাত্রী ফাল্গুনী ছোটবেলায় একটি দুর্ঘটনায় দু’হাতের কবজি হারায়)। সেই সাথে আরো ভালো লেগেছিলো এও জেনে যে পরেরদিনই তার এই সাফল্যের খবর চারপাশে ছড়িয়ে দিতে তার পাশে এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে প্রিন্ট মিডিয়া। কিন্তু এই ভালো লাগা পরক্ষনেই উলটে গিয়েছে যখন সংবাদ মাধ্যমগুলোর সংবাদের মাঝে সত্যতার পরিবর্তে বিভ্রান্তি প্রকাশ পেয়েছে।

দেশের স্বনামধন্য দুটি দৈনিক ফাল্গুনিকে নিয়ে যে তথ্য প্রকাশ করেছেন তাকে কোনভাবেই দ্বায়িত্বশীল সাংবাদিকের সংবাদ পরিবেশন বলা যাচ্ছে না। সংবাদ মাধ্যমগুলো থেকে জানা যায় ফাল্গু্নী সাহার পরিবারের আর্থিক অবস্থার সীমাবদ্ধতা তার পড়াশুনা চালিয়ে নেবার পথে অন্তরায় এরপরেই দেয়া আছে সম্পুর্ন ভিত্তিহীন ও মনগড়া তথ্য । কেননা ফাল্গুনি সাহার পড়াশোনার ব্যয় ভার বহন করতে জানুয়ারি' ২০১১ থেকে এগিয়ে আসে বি-স্ক্যান এবং আগামীতেও তার পাশে থাকার আশ্বাসে আরো দৃঢ়তার সাথেই নিয়োজিত ।

এই ঘটনার পর পর-ই আমরা ফাল্গুনির বাবার সাথে যোগাযোগ করে জানতে পারি, শুধুমাত্র মেয়ের পরীক্ষার ফলাফল জানতেই সাংবাদিক আসেন তার বাড়িতে। এর বাইরে কিছুই জানতে চাওয়া হয়নি তার কাছে।

পাঠক মাত্রই সংবাদ মাধ্যমের সত্যতা, স্বচ্ছতা ও গ্রহনযোগ্যতা আশা করে। আমরাও এর বাইরে নই । ব্যক্তিগত নাম বা প্রতিষ্ঠানের নাম  প্রকাশের কোন সীমাবদ্ধতা যদি থেকেও থাকে তথাপিও ফাল্গু্নী সাহার পড়াশোনার অনিশ্চয়তার বক্তব্যটি সম্পুর্নভাবেই ভুল তথ্য প্রচার যা বিভ্রান্তির জন্ম দেয়।

আমরা সংবাদ মাধ্যমগুলোর বস্তুনিষ্ঠতা ও সামাজিক দ্বায়িত্বে্র পরিচয়বাহী সংবাদ আশা করি। সেই সাথে আবারো দৃঢ়ভাবে বলতে চাই। প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তি কোন সামাজিক বোঝা নয় বরং মানসিক প্রতিবন্ধকতা আমাদের এগিয়ে যাওয়ার অন্তরায় এক কুপমন্ডুক সমাজ ব্যবস্থা। ফাল্গু্নী সাহা কিংবা আর যে কোন শিশুর পাশে আমরা দাঁড়াবো আমাদের ক্ষুদ্র সামর্থ নিয়েই কেননা আজকের শিশুরাই আগামীর সমাজে বয়ে আনবে প্রগতি। ফাল্গু্নী সাহার পড়াশুনার ব্যয়ভার আমরা নিশ্চিত করেছি এবং আগামীতেও তার পাশেই আমরা আছি ।

 

আরো কিছু তথ্য আপনাদের সামনে তুলে ধরছি। ফাল্গুনীর পড়ার খরচ বাবদ তাঁদের দ্বারা নির্ধারিত মাসিক খরচ ২০০০ টাকা হিসেবে প্রতি তিন মাসের টাকা একসাথে ৬০০০ টাকার একটি চেক ফাল্গুনির বাবা জগদিশ চন্দ্র বসুর হাতে তুলে দেয়া হয় গত ৮ ডিসেম্বর, ২০১০ এবং বলা হয় আগামী এক বছর (মানে পুরো ২০১১) ফাল্গুনির লেখাপড়ার খরচ আমরাই দেবো এবং সে যদি ভাল রেজাল্ট করে তাহলে পরবর্তী দায়িত্বও আমাদের। সেখানে ফাল্গুনির স্কুলের প্রধান শিক্ষকও উপস্থিত ছিলেন। প্রতি তিন মাস অন্তর আমরা এই টাকা পাঠিয়ে যাচ্ছি।

বি-স্ক্যান এর পক্ষ থেকে ফাল্গুনির হাতে চেক হস্তান্তর করা হচ্ছে।

গলাচিপার স্থানীয় পত্রিকায় খবরটি ছাপা হয়েছিল।

প্রথমবার জানুয়ারী’ ২০১১ থেকে মার্চ ২০১১ পর্যন্ত ছয় হাজার টাকার চেক প্রদান।

দ্বিতীয়বার টিটির মাধ্যমে এপ্রিল ২০১১ থেকে জুন ২০১১ পর্যন্ত তিন মাসের টাকা পাঠানো হয়েছে।

Winning the world of Web from wheelchair

DHAKA, May 6: Pictures of 28-year-old Sabrina Sultana, laughing with her head held back, can be seen both on her Facebook page and on her blog. Looking at them, it would seem as if she was a woman with not a care in the world. But pictures do lie. Wheelchair-bound, she has not ventured out into the open for most of her life. But that hasn’t stopped Sabrina from living. Recently she won the second prize in an international blogging competition organised by German news broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

In her blog — ‘Facebook, I and Our Dreams’ — the Chittagong woman has written about existing obstacles that she had to face in life as someone who was called “disabled” by everyone around her.

At the age of 10, Sabrina became a victim muscular dystrophy, a deadly disease which makes the human body totally dysfunctional as time passes. Today, she dreams of an equal society where she can hold her head high and not be the victim of indecent rebukes.
“After the disease was detected, my parents began hiding me from the society in fear that I will be rebuked,” she told ‘The Independent’. “They did it because of their lack of awareness about the disease. As time passed, I became totally captive in my room — I passed my days reading books, and sometimes watching television.”

Sabrina said it was her sister’s plight that made her take up activism. Tasnin, who was 14 years younger to Sabrina, was also diagnosed with the same disease. “At that point, after getting a laptop, I peeked into the world of Internet and Facebook. It changed my life — I got the easiest way to share my pain and sorrow with millions of others,” she said.
Along with another physically challenged woman, Salma Mahbub, Sabrina started a group called Bangladeshi Systems Change Advocacy Network (B-SCAN), an association that is trying to raise awareness on the plight of people with disabilities in Bangladesh by creating network through advocacy for the system change in the country.
On November 1, 2009, Sabrina wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, making some suggestions to reduce the prevailing discriminations against persons with disabilities in the country.

‘’If I was your own daughter, would you hide me from the society?” she asked in the letter. “If my brothers can dream of a bright future achieving higher education, why I can’t do the same? How long shall we remain in a society that is so dark?”  In her letter, she wished to meet to the PM to share her opinion in eliminating barriers for people with special abilities. But no one from the PMO has yet contacted her two years since she sent the letter.
However, Sabrina has a plan. She writes in Bangladeshi Systems Change Advocacy Network (B-SCAN, a very popular group among the Facebook communities), “I want to see that a beautiful, human society for all the peoples with special abilities. Mainly, I want to develop the living standards of such people by building massive awareness and protecting our rights.”

She said four initiatives can play a vital role in upgrading social dignity of people with special abilities: education, employment, friendly moving, and right to access.
“I know I cannot change people’s mentality only with Facebook groups, so we have to be more active,” she said. “I want to do many things and I believe that the day will come in Bangladesh when people with disability can come out and breathe under the open sky.
That is my only dream and aim of my life.”

As a message for the general people, she said, ‘’We, persons with special abilities, do not want kindness — rather, we need our rights.”

Debate Competition-2011 by CRP Road Safary Forum

Road accident is the most burning issue of our country. And major portion of its victims are our students. So the students should take the responsibility to save the country from the curse of road accident. The students of Bangladesh Health Professions Institute has realized this truth and finally accepted the challenge. They have formed CRP-Road Safety Forum whose main concern is to fight against road accident.

On 13^th April, they have arranged the Debate Competition. The topic was “Drivers and helpers were responsible behind road traffic accident”. Both the ally team as well as the opponent team showed their brilliant performance.  Probably for the first time in our country a debate competition was held in this issue. The program began at 2.30pm in Patients’ Dining Room.  Prof. Dr. M A Quader, the Principal inaugurated & chaired the program and it was coordinated by Md.Waliul Islam, advocacy and networking officer of CRP. Pradip Das ( also known as Akash Pradip) the Lecturer and Secretary of the Road Safety Forum delivered a short speech. Md. Julker Nayan, the Coordinator of Occupational Therapy Department,  Md. Nasirul Islam, Assistant Professor of Physiotherapy  and Md. Jahangir Alam,  the Coordinator of Speech & Language Therapy Department Therapy Department  took the responsibility of judgment. At the end of the program certificates were distributed among the participants.

Masud Rana, Faruq Ahmed, ATM Thouhid and  Nazmul Hasan along with all other students who are associated with Road Safety Forum deserve special appreciation for the grand initiative that they have taken.

Autistic brains "organised differently" say scientists

People with autism use their brains differently from other people, which may explain why some have extraordinary abilities to remember and draw objects in detail, according to new research.

University of Montreal scientists say in autistic people, the brain areas that deal with visual information are highly developed.

Other brain areas are less active.

The National Autistic Society says the findings significantly increase understanding of the condition.

The research, published in the journal Human Brain Mapping, pulls together 15 years of data on the way the autistic brain works.

Better at visual tasks

It suggests that the brains of autistic people are organised differently from those of other people; the area at the back of the brain, which processes visual information, is more highly developed.

That leaves less brain capacity in areas which deal with decision-making and planning.

That may be why people with autism can be better than others at carrying out some types of visual tasks.

For example, some are able to draw highly accurate and detailed images from memory.

However, they can find it difficult to interpret things like facial expressions.

The condition varies in severity, with some people functioning well, but others completely unable to take part in normal society.

The researchers believe their findings may lead towards new ways of helping people to live with the condition.

"For example, this may show a means to help people to literacy in a much more natural way than the usual methods of helping autistic people," said Dr Laurent Mottron from the University of Montreal.

"The natural tendency is to think that autism is a form of disorganisation. Here, what we see is that it is a reorganisation of the brain," he said.

Understanding autism

Autism experts regard the research findings as significant.

"This review highlights that autism should not only be seen as a condition with behavioural difficulties, but should also be associated with particular skill," said Dr Christine Ecker from the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College, London.

"It offers us unique insights into the way people with autism perceive their environment and helps us to understand some of their behaviour."

She said it added to the understanding of autism. "Knowing the strengths and difficulties of someone with autism may help to better understand their needs and help them maximize their potential."

Carol Povey of the National Autistic Society said: "This study is interesting as it begins to demonstrate why people with autism often show a strong single channel for focus and attention.

"Some adults with autism develop their own ways of coping with this experience, some seek out calm and quiet places, whilst others find creative outlets, like art, can help them both process the information as well as give others an insight into how they see the world.

"The more insight we have into the way autism affects sensory processing, the more people with autism, their families and professionals can develop strategies to make daily life easier."

The condition, which affects how the child relates to other people, is usually only spotted some years later.

But enquiring about a child's use of eye contact, sounds, words and gestures can flag up early on if more detailed screening is needed, a study shows.

The findings in over 10,000 infants are published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Of the 10,479 one-year-olds seen, 184 failed the initial check-up and were referred for further evaluation by the team at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

To date, 32 have received a provisional or final diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and another 101 have been found to have other conditions that involve developmental delay.

These rates, say the authors, are typical of what you might expect to see in a population of this size, suggesting that the screening could work.

Lead researcher Karen Pierce said: "Given lack of universal screening of infants for such disorders at 12 months, this programme could be adopted by any paediatric office, at virtually no cost, to aid in the identification of children with developmental delays.

"Importantly, parents will be able to get help for their children at a much earlier age than before."

Autism is a spectrum condition, which means that, while all people with autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways.

Early diagnosis Some people with autism are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support.

The sooner the condition is diagnosed, the quicker they can access the care available.

Carol Povey, Director of the National Autistic Society's Centre for autism, said: "We welcome research which could help autism be diagnosed earlier.

"Whilst a formal diagnosis requires a comprehensive clinical assessment, screening checks at key developmental stages can help professionals identify children who may be showing signs of autism."
